History Good Energy Group PLC started life as the UK-arm of a pan European green energy fund, whose business was to develop the demand and supply of renewable energy across Europe, and to encourage individuals to invest in and buy renewable energy. Today, this ethos remains central to the company's strategic approach. Good Energy Group continues to develop both the demand and supply of renewable electricity within Great Britain. In addition, the Group offers the customers of Good Energy the opportunity to invest in the group of companies that supplies them with renewable electricity. The business that became the Good Energy Group was set up in the UK in 1997 to start to change the energy mix in Europe. Post-war energy systems had been gradually centralised giving governments increasing control of energy systems, and distancing consumers from the real cost of their energy, both environmental and economic. This differed radically from the pre-war "localised" distribution networks where the local community was much closer to both the source and the economics of their power. In 1997, the UK government pioneered a shift in the way energy markets worked in Europe and the liberalisation of the energy markets was implemented through various European Directives. Out of this came the opportunity to set up a completely new type of electricity company, that for the first time in many years was allowed to sell renewable power to both homes and businesses, and bring choice back to the consumer. This saw the start of the Good Energy Group business, which went through various forms and brand names, until establishing the structure of the Group today.
